About SMDE

Sheet Metal Design & Engineering, under one roof.

From 2D to 3D to FEM and Fabrication. SMDE is a specialist consultancy that connects CAD, structural analysis and fabrication knowledge.

Our approach

Where design, analysis and manufacturing meet.

Sheet-metal parts are often designed by one team, checked by another and made by a third. Each hand-over loses information, and the result is parts that are heavier than they need to be, hard to fold or impossible to install as drawn.

SMDE was set up to close those gaps. We take a component from a 2D drawing or concept through 3D modelling, structural calculation and FEM analysis to fabrication drawings and nesting, keeping the engineering intent intact at every step.

We work with manufacturers, fabricators, contractors and engineering companies across the UK and internationally, either on a single part or as an extension of your own design office.

What we stand for

How we work with you.

Engineering first

Every recommendation is backed by calculation, analysis or manufacturing evidence, and documented so you can check it.

Built for the shop floor

We design with real tooling, bend radii, sheet sizes and assembly steps in mind, because a drawing is only useful if it can be made.

Clear communication

Plain-English reports, marked-up drawings and direct access to the engineer doing the work.

Less material, less waste

Optimising thickness, geometry and nesting is good engineering, good business and better for the environment.

Our process

Four steps from your drawing to the shop floor.

A simple, transparent process so you always know what is being done, what it costs and when it will arrive.

  1. Review

We review your drawings, models and requirements and flag anything missing or unbuildable.

  2. Scope & quote

You receive a clear scope, deliverables list and quotation before any work starts.

  3. Engineer

We model, calculate, analyse and optimise, sharing progress at agreed checkpoints.

  4. Deliver

Models, drawings, flat patterns, reports and files in the formats your team and suppliers use.

Capabilities

What we work with.

  • 2D & 3D CADDWG, DXF, PDF, STEP, IGES and native sheet-metal models
  • Structural & FEMHand calculations and finite element analysis of parts and assemblies
  • MaterialsCarbon steel, galvanised steel, stainless steel and aluminium
  • ManufacturingLaser and punch cutting, press-brake folding, welding and assembly
Industries

Who we work with.

Every sector has its own loads, tolerances and cost drivers. We bring the same method to each: understand how the part is made and used, verify it, then optimise it.

Manufacturing & OEMs

Product manufacturers who need sheet-metal parts, enclosures and assemblies that are right first time and cost less to produce at volume.

Typical challenges

  • Legacy 2D drawings with no 3D data
  • Parts over-specified for safety
  • Cost pressure on high-volume components

How SMDE helps

  • 2D to 3D conversion
  • Thickness and section optimisation
  • Nesting and BOM reviews

Architectural Metalwork

Cladding, facade, balustrade and feature metalwork where appearance, tolerance and structural performance all have to line up.

Typical challenges

  • Visible bowing and oil-canning of panels
  • Complex set-out and interfaces
  • Many near-identical variants

How SMDE helps

  • Bowing and deflection analysis
  • Bracket and fixing design
  • Shop drawings for every variant

Construction & Contractors

Main and specialist contractors who need brackets, supports and fabricated steelwork designed, checked and documented for site.

Typical challenges

  • Late design changes on site
  • Load paths through thin-gauge parts
  • Installation access and tolerance

How SMDE helps

  • Structural calculations
  • Buildable bracket systems
  • Clear installation drawings

Industrial Equipment

Machine builders and equipment suppliers with guards, frames, housings and panels that must be stiff, safe and easy to assemble.

Typical challenges

  • Vibration and stiffness requirements
  • Assemblies with many folded parts
  • Weight versus strength trade-offs

How SMDE helps

  • FEM stiffness and stress checks
  • Assembly design in 3D
  • Fabrication drawings and flat patterns

Building Products

Manufacturers of profiles, channels, trays and systems who need verified performance data and efficient, repeatable designs.

Typical challenges

  • Proving load capacity of formed sections
  • Material cost per metre
  • Carbon data requested by specifiers

How SMDE helps

  • Section analysis and buckling checks
  • Thickness optimisation
  • Embodied carbon assessment

Specialist Fabricators

Sheet-metal fabricators who want engineering support on demand: modelling, calculations and drawings without growing a design office.

Typical challenges

  • Customer drawings that cannot be made as drawn
  • Peaks in drawing-office workload
  • Scrap and rework on complex jobs

How SMDE helps

  • Design-for-manufacture reviews
  • Overflow CAD and shop drawings
  • Nesting and yield improvement
Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Anything else you would like to know? Ask us directly.

What information do you need to quote?

Whatever you have: drawings (PDF, DWG, DXF), 3D models (STEP, IGES), sketches or photos, plus the material, quantities and any loads or deadlines you know. We review it and come back with questions or a clear scope and quotation before any work starts.

What files do you deliver?

Native CAD or neutral STEP models, DXF flat patterns for cutting, PDF fabrication and shop drawings with bend tables, and calculation or FEM reports, in the formats your team and suppliers use.

Do you manufacture parts?

No. SMDE is an engineering consultancy. We produce the design, verification and manufacturing documentation, and work alongside your own fabrication team or supplier.

Can you work with clients outside the UK?

Yes. We work with clients in the UK and internationally. Projects are run remotely with drawings, models and reports exchanged electronically, and online reviews at agreed checkpoints.

Will my drawings be kept confidential?

Yes. Client drawings and models are used only for your project, and we are happy to sign a non-disclosure agreement before you share them.

Can you check a design someone else has produced?

Yes. We regularly review existing parts and assemblies for strength, manufacturability and material use, and recommend changes where they make a difference.

Have a drawing, a sketch or a problem part?

Send us what you have. We will review it, ask the right questions and come back with a clear scope and quotation.
